Highlights

V-Crete (Virtual Crete) is Web Application featuring marker based Augmented Reality. It is based on the AR.js library that uses the ARToolkit framework, an A-Frame based mature and feature rich Augmented Reality toolkit. The markers selected for this application are amongst the many marker patterns supported.

Presentation

Twenty seven (27) popular Cretan locations have been selected and marked (geographically correct), on a blank map of Crete. For the marking process we used specialized markers featuring patterns that can be detected by the Web Application. A sample marker is displayed bellow: Marker The visitor may download the map featuring the marker patterns and either display it on a screen or print it. A device featuring a camera (computer or mobile for best experience) can then be used to examine the map. Upon recognition of a marker pattern, a photograph of the equivalent location is revealed in the form of a rotating cube. The name of the location is also displayed on-top of the cube. If the visitor moves closer to a particular rotating cube, a page is displayed offering more information about the location portrayed by the cube.

Future Steps

VR mode is supported by the technologies utilized in V-Crete, but it does not seem to be working correctly. More research and testing could make VR mode work as expected.
